Have you ever found yourself reading a passage of Scripture and wondering if what you’re looking at is meant to be taken literally, or if there is a deeper, prophetic meaning hidden beneath the surface? This is a challenge that many believers face. In our latest session, we welcomed Brother Emmanuel Rudolph and dove deep into the mechanics of prophetic language in Scripture. The truth is, there is a fine line between literalism and allegory, and missing the mark can lead to significant confusion about the nature of God’s Word.
Many people have a propensity to make something prophetic when it is literal, or they turn every verse into an allegory when it was meant to be taken at face value. To truly understand the Bible, we must invite the Spirit of God into our translations. Without the Spirit, we are left with carnal interpretations that fail to capture the heart of the Father.
The Problem with Human Interpretation
The core issue in biblical study often comes down to how we approach the text. Some readers try to find a literal meaning in every symbol, while others attempt to turn every single verse into a metaphor. Both of these extremes miss what God is actually saying. The principle we must follow is simple but profound: the Spirit who gave the Word governs its meaning.
We do not get to decide what a passage means based on our personal preferences or what is “palatable” to us. Humans often try to change the meaning of a thing if it is difficult to digest. However, Scripture means what it says and says what it means, but there is a catch. Carnal people will never fully grasp certain prophetic passages. Only Spirit-filled individuals can understand Spirit-led information. To read the Bible accurately, we must approach it with reverence, accuracy, and humility, recognizing God’s unique vocabulary.
God Speaks in Similitudes
God does not always speak in a direct, plain-text way that resembles a modern memo. As Hosea 12:10 tells us, “I have also spoken by the prophet, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.” God uses signs, symbols, and pictures to communicate truth. A symbol is not “less true” than a plain statement; it is simply the truth presented in a picture.
While we might wish God would just leave a note by the side of the bed every morning telling us exactly what to do, that would remove the need for engagement. God isn’t looking for a simple dialogue; He is looking for an intimate, conversational relationship. He speaks to each of us differently because no two people are exactly the same.
The Three Modes of Prophetic Speech
To navigate the prophetic nature of the Bible, we need to understand the three primary modes through which God speaks. It is important to remember that in the realm of the Spirit, past, present, and future are often viewed as one.
-
Forthtelling: This is the act of speaking God’s mind into the present. It involves rebuke, warning, comfort, and a call back to the covenant. It is God saying, “Come now, and let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:18).
-
Foretelling: This involves announcing beforehand what God will do in history. This often includes specific names, places, or times.
-
Unveiling: Also known as apocalyptic vision, this provides a “Heaven’s eye view” of Earth. It uses beasts, numbers, and cosmic signs to explain the rise and fall of kingdoms, much like the visions found in the Book of Daniel.
Why God Withholds Dates and Times
One of the most common frustrations for believers is the “waiting game.” We often want God to give us a specific date and time for when He will move. However, God rarely provides a calendar. Why? Because if He gave us a specific date, our faith would only last up until that moment. God wants us in a perpetual state of faith, because without faith, it is impossible to please Him.
Furthermore, there is a strategic reason for the vagueness of timing. The enemy has the ability to attempt to interfere with timelines if he knows the exact dates and hours of God’s moves. Consider the birth of Jesus: it was foretold 700 years in advance, but the exact hour was never announced. This kept the enemy guessing, even though he tried to intervene by influencing figures like Pharaoh and Herod to kill children in specific age groups to stop the “Promised One.”
The Interruption of Prophetic Timelines
This leads to a heavy and sobering realization regarding our current dispensation. When we look at the prevalence of abortion, we must consider it through a prophetic lens. Abortion is more than a social issue; it is the interruption of the timelines of significant people.
When we don’t allow God’s creative prowess to take root, we don’t know what we are interrupting. We don’t know how many prophets or world leaders have had their lives cut short before they could fulfill their God-given purpose. Every life in the womb is a human being moved by the same Spirit, and when those lives are interrupted, it shifts the history of our world.
Typology and the Marine Kingdom
If you aren’t looking for prophetic language, you will miss the incredible depth of typology in the Bible. For example, consider the imagery of the “Marine Kingdom.” The Pharaohs of Egypt were believed to draw their power from the waters. When Moses led the Israelites through the Red Sea, it wasn’t just a physical escape; it was a demonstration of God’s supremacy over the Marine Kingdom.
The “Red Sea” itself is a typology for the salvific effect of the blood. We see this pattern throughout Scripture:
-
The blood placed over the doorposts in Egypt.
-
The blood sprinkled on the high priest and the congregation at Mount Sinai.
-
The first animal sacrifice in Eden to cover Adam and Eve’s transgression.
If you aren’t Spirit-led in your study, these connections won’t “jump off the page.” You will see a story, but you will miss the prophetic architecture behind it.
The Need for Deeper Study
The Bible commands us to “study to show thyself approved,” but many believers treat “reading” and “studying” as the same thing. They are not. Many modern church environments fail to teach the depth of the Word, often leaving no room for the Holy Spirit to guide the congregation into all truth.
Unfortunately, some leadership structures can be narcissistic, positioning the pastor as the sole arbiter of truth. This discourages believers from going home, opening their Bibles, and asking the Holy Spirit for clarification. Instead of going to the Source, people turn to AI, the internet, or other secondary means to hear from God. We must return to a place where we rely on the Holy Spirit to search the deep things of God and reveal them to us.
Key Takeaways for Your Prophetic Journey
-
Invite the Spirit: Never study the Word without asking the Holy Spirit for wisdom and revelation.
-
Understand the Modes: Recognize whether God is forthtelling (speaking to your present), foretelling (revealing the future), or unveiling (giving you a heavenly perspective).
-
Look for Typology: Pay attention to recurring symbols like blood, water, and numbers; they are “truth in a picture.”
-
Trust the Timing: If God hasn’t given you a date, it’s because He wants you to walk by faith, not by sight.
-
Respect the Prophetic Timeline: Recognize that every life has a prophetic purpose and that God’s timing is deliberate, not vague.
Conclusion
Prophetic language is a gift that allows us to see the world through God’s eyes. It is deliberate, intricate, and deeply personal. As we move forward, let us challenge ourselves to move beyond surface-level reading. Let us be a people who study with reverence, seeking the “deep that calleth unto deep,” and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us into the fullness of truth. Whether it’s understanding the typology of the Red Sea or recognizing the weight of interrupted destinies, the Word of God is alive; we just have to listen with spiritual ears.
